Hong Kong: Save Sai Kung, Tai Long Wan

Saturday, 24 July 2010.

For public ownership and democratic control of all natural scenery

We come here to protest against the government and capitalists who are destroying Tai Long Sai Wan and  Hong Kong.

Recently the Chairman of the Mongolian Energy Corporation Simon Lo Lin-shing, has bought 10000 square metres of natural land at a cost of more than HK$16 million in Tai Long Sai Wan, Sai Kung to develop a private villa with a swimming pool and golf course. However, all government departments ignored his actions until people showed their anger and media attention came. A Hong Kong beauty spot is in danger of being carved up by a ruthless capitalist.

TheTai Long Sai Wan event is just the tip of the iceberg. Based on media reports, 11 out of 24 natural parks in Hong Kong's coastal areas are not protected by regulation . Some sources from the WWF show that from 2003 to 2010 55 nature sites in HK have been put  in danger of destruction.

Early this year, the most expensive high-speed rail project in the world was resisted by normal people and peasants who are living in the planned construction area. The government used police force and the law to repress people's protests.

In Hong Kong, there has  always been severe water pollution and air pollution. This March, the historical air pollution resulted in over 100 people being admitted to hospital and caused nearly 2000 elderly people to have breathing problems.

Today, environmental issues and the climate crisis cannot be fixed at once. In Hong Kong, all environment issues are closely linked with  mainland China. Without international cooperation with other countries and especially with mainland China, it is impossible to fundamentally resolve the environment issue in HK.

The Tai Long Sai Wan project has been temporarily halted, But if we retreat now, what we have won, will be quickly lost. That is why we need to further mobilise people to protest, to publicise and to show our anger to the government and the capitalists.

Tai Long Sai Wan is in danger, Hong Kong is in danger. Unity is strength. It is time for us to fight back.
