New issue of Socialist (社会主义者‏) magazine

Friday, 5 March 2010.

Spring 2010 issue of the Chinese socialist quarterly is a theme issue on women’s struggle

“This is modern slavery,” explains Sringatin, chairperson of the Indonesian Migrant Workers’ Union (IMWU) commenting on the abuses that domestic workers suffer through illegal underpayment and overcharging of recruitment agency fees. She is one of three Asian women interviewed in this issue. In addition to a cover article on International Women’s Day by Elin Gauffin, a member of the CWI’s international executive committee, there are also articles on the democracy struggle and May byelections in Hong Kong. Chen Lizhi looks at state repression in China and the case of Liu Xiaobo, while Fang Guoli interviews Joe Higgins, Irish CWI member of the European Parliament. This issue also includes articles on youth unemployment in China, the transport crisis, and organising students in Hong Kong.

For the first time an English version of Socialist magazine is also available, with the focus on non-Chinese migrants in Hong Kong. The magazine is produced by volunteers who brave China’s censorship laws and worsening crackdown on left-wing critics, not just liberals and pro-US dissidents. So donations are needed to support this project. The Chinese and English editions can be ordered (price including postage 30HKD, or outside China €3.50 including postage). Order from cwi.china@gmail or use our Paypal function.
